Why cruising is ideal for today's family.
Published Wednesday, August 8th 2012 - Updated Friday, August 10th 2012Why Cruising? Why not a road trip? I believe that any time set aside exclusively for family is worthwhile whether is it is in a tent or on a cruise ship. Most of us baby boomers went on road trips when we were kids and now have fun memories of those old ’57 Chevy journeys. We can laugh now, right?
While there is still a time and place for every type of vacation, just what makes a cruise vacation ideal for today’s family? Could it be that the middle of the ocean is one place you don’t have to tape your spouse’s cell phone to your forehead so he/she will look at you? Or maybe your kids will stop texting their friends and actually enter into a good old fashioned game of table tennis on the pool deck with Mom and Dad.
There is something about crossing over that gangway that just says “leave it all behind.” We all know Internet access is expensive and unreliable in the middle of the ocean so most cruisers learn to turn off the cell phones and leave the laptops at home. Someone else can be on call at work … you are sailing into the sunset with a glass in your hand and a smile on your face.
Who isn’t happy on a cruise ship? Mom has no cleaning, picking up, making beds, cooking meals. She can send the kids to Kid’s Club and go to the Spa. Dad gets to pretend he is still 35 as he tries the rock climbing wall and goes zip lining. (Second day he heads to the library for a good book instead.) Kids get some time away from Mom & Dad to make friends and be entertained within their own age interests. The opportunities for both “me time” and “we time” can offer balance to your days.
One last bonus for cruise travel today is getting to enjoy so many different ports with shore excursions more available than ever. Waking up in new port each day is a wonderful experience. It brings variety and a multicultural experience to a 7 day family vacation that is both fun and educational.
So the next time the sea calls your name ~ answer in person and leave your phone at home!
