Are There Bad Staterooms On All Ships?

When someone cooks and cleans for me, serves me and entertains me for a week, I have to believe any stateroom on a ship is “desirable”.  However, yes, there are a few stateroom locations that are slightly less desirable due to their location.  So to make sure our clients have the best time every cruise, we always try to avoid the following stateroom locations:

Staterooms directly above or below lounges, night clubs or casino. Unless you plan on shutting the clubs down yourself at 1:00 am, you should try to avoid staterooms that are directly over or below the ship’s clubs and bars.  The bass music from the lounge clubs can easily be heard in these staterooms. If you retire early this is not the location for you where you can listen to DJ’s spin beats after midnight.

Adjoining staterooms. Adjoining staterooms are great for larger families as most staterooms only hold a maximum of 4 passengers.  However, due to the extra door between the cabins, you can often hear conversations from louder neighbors in the adjoining cabin next to you.  The door is not as soundproof as the walls are so unless you actually plan to share your stateroom with the guests next door, do not book an adjoining stateroom.

Staterooms directly above the theater.  Stateroom walls on cruise ships are relatively soundproof however, while they do block a fair amount of noise, you will still be able to hear music in the staterooms directly above the theater.  The good news is that most of the production shows are over by 11:00 p.m.

Staterooms directly below the pool deck.  Very early each morning, staff members will begin to rearrange and organize the pool deck loungers getting the lido deck ready for the day.  All this dragging and shuffling across the lido deck floor can easily wake up passengers who are sleeping underneath.

Staterooms near arcades/kids clubs – This is more of an issue on older ships as the cruise lines now usually locate these noisy areas away from staterooms. Being near the kids clubs could possibly means lots of kids in the hallway by your stateroom.

So then what staterooms as most desirable? I call them sandwich staterooms.  The deck above and deck below should be only other staterooms.  Also remember that staterooms that are located midship will feel less movement than aft (back) staterooms and staterooms near the bow (front) of the ship.
